40th Anniversary Celebration

On 2 November we celebrated 40 years of our Gifted and Talented Visual Art Program. We had a great turn out with current and ex Gifted and Talented Visual Art students attend.

As part of our celebrations, the inaugural Shaun Tan ‘Emerging Artist’ Award was presented and awarded to our Year 12 Gifted and Talented Visual Art student Torren Whisson.

Guests were able to stroll through a number of galleries including the Ron Murphy Gallery which displayed our students’ artwork.  An exhibition was set up in our staff room for guests to view our very own Art Acquisition and 40 x 40 Art Exhibition created by current and ex-tutors which was themed for our 40-year celebration.

A memorabilia exhibition showcased the Gifted and Talented Visual Art students awards, events and news over the past 40 years. We were lucky to have one of our past students Gina Kitchen bring in some photos and a dress she made in 1979 as part of the specialist Art Course at our school, in commemoration of Western Australia’s 150th Anniversary.

We had our Gifted and Talented Visual Art students demonstrating portrait painting.

Refreshments were available for a gold coin donation with the proceeds going to our sister school in Cambodia. The Angkor Project is a collaboration between the Western Australian Department of Education (DoE) and the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport that builds sister school relationships to enhance the education of students in both Cambodia and Western Australia.

Overall it was a successful day where ex-students were able to catch up with each other and reminisce.
