Years 7-10 Overview
At Balcatta Senior High School our lower secondary courses are developed in accordance with the major learning outcomes agreed to be essential for all students to achieve by The Australian Curriculum and Curriculum Framework.
By exposing students to a wide range of subjects in Years 7-10, we strive to provide a diverse and well balanced education. These subjects are drawn from the Australian Curriculum, Western Australian Curriculum and the Curriculum Framework’s eight learning areas, with a strong focus in each class on developing the 7 General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum: Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding.
- The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Studies, Music , Photography and Visual Arts)
- Humanities & Social Sciences
- Health & Physical Education
- Technologies (Design Technology, Business and Information Technology, Food and Textiles Technology)
- Career Development
- Vocational Education (Year 10 Business, Year 10 Information Technology, Work Experience)
In Years 7 and 8, all students follow a common course, covering the learning outcomes of the eight learning areas. As part of our Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program and our Specialist Dance Program, students receive extra tuition to develop their skills and knowledge in these areas.
Once they enter Years 9 and 10, students have the opportunity to choose some of the subjects within their own program. English, Mathematics, Science, Health & Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Career Development continue to be compulsory subjects in lower secondary.
At Balcatta Senior High School, we are also proud to offer a range of academic extension and specialist programs, to encourage and develop students with special interests.
