Year 6 Orientation Day – 29 November 2022

1 December 2022

On Tuesday 29 November, Year 6 students from various primary schools who have enrolled for Year 7, 2023 attended an Orientation Day.  They participated in a comprehensive range of curriculum activities to assist in the transition to high school.

Students were addressed by Principal Helen Maitland and Associate Principals Daniel Drummond and Cathie Bonner.  Year Coordinator Alison Martin explained how the day would run and students were allocated to their mixed school groups and introduced to their group leaders and Year 7 group ambassadors.

School ambassadors assisted with some of the class activities, such as the Escape Room, Science and performances from music, dance and drama students.  They did a fantastic job.

During the course of the day, students participated in a range of taster lessons such as MESH subjects (Mathematics, English, Science and Humanities), Drama, Art, Food, Physical Education and Escape Rooms.  Ordering food at the cafeteria for Lunch 1 and 2 gave students a feel for break times at high school and the associated expectations.  After Lunch 2, some groups participated in an Escape Room activity coordinated by the Year 10 students.  To finish the day, students attended a performance from the Year 7 Drama students, Year 8 Dance students and Year 9 Music students.  The day was a huge success with students showing respect toward staff, each other and the school environment in general.  We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students to Balcatta Senior High School in 2023.

A big thank you to Cathie Bonner and Alison Martin for all their work in organising this whole school event.  Thank you to all staff who assisted with enrolments/collection of permission forms, welcoming parents and organising activities.
