Supporting Family Conversations Project

28 February 2019

Telethon Kids Institute in collaboration with School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), and support from the Mental Health Commission, have selected Balcatta Senior High School to participate in the Supporting Family Conversations Project.

The Supporting Family Conversations project is developing resources to enhance parent-child communication and assist parents to reduce the risk of harm to teenagers in the online environment and from alcohol use. The research team comprises: Dr Therese Shaw and Dr Robyn Johnston from Telethon Kids Institute, Professor Simone Pettigrew, Curtin University and Dr Conor Gilligan, University of Newcastle.

Parents are invited to complete a survey which can be completed on paper or online at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/Supportconversations. Paper survey packs were distributed to parents who attended the recent Year 7 Parent Information Session at Balcatta Senior High School. Remaining surveys have been issued to students to take home and give to parents.  Each pack contains a parent information form, survey document and a postage paid envelope. The survey should take about 20 minutes to complete and must be completed by April 12 2019.

This invitation is for parents/carers of all Year 7 students in your child’s school. The information you give will be completely anonymous, so you will not be identified and all information collected is treated as private and confidential.

As a thank you for giving up your time to participate, you will be able to enter in a draw to win one of three $100 gift vouchers. Once you have completed the survey you will need to register for the prize draw at: https://tinyurl.com/SFC-prize.
