As part of our Remembrance Day Commemoration our Year 9 students took part in a project-based learning task about World War One. They had some assistance from some of our Year 11 students.
Year 9 students were asked the question: How do we remember?
To tackle this question five learning areas were involved in the process; HaSS, English, Certificate ll In Retail Cosmetics and Photography.
HaSS - Researched Australia's involvement in WWI on the home front, significant battles and conditions. Collected and deconstructed primary sources. Through this analysis students focussed on the use of portraits and letters found in Australian archives and homes.
English - Identified and analysed language and content found in primary sources (WWI letters). Students then recreated their own letters from various Australian (and Turkish) perspectives of the war.
Certificate ll in Retail Cosmetics - Year 11 students investigated period hair design and make up as part of their design brief. They then applied make up and hair design to the year 9 students to authenticate their costumes for photography.
Photography - Once photographs were taken, students rendered and manipulated their images to enhance their authenticity.
Design and Technology - Identified types of period frames used to house WWI portraits. Students then recreated period frames to display their photographs.
The result was a fantastic compilation of student work that is currently being exhibited in the library.
