About the Secondary Student Career Show:
Welcome to the future – where science, technology, engineering and maths are essential to both our work and day-to-day activities than ever before. Showcasing how our work lives will change, the presentations explored how students can harness their STEM skills for maximum enjoyment, well-being and – perhaps most importantly – their career opportunities. The interactive and informative experience was designed to inspire students to study STEM – both now and into their futures. It also showed how STEM is an important component of every job.
At one point a staff member and a student were challenged to write a message using a device with no visible keyboard. Ms Henry did a splendid job, but Lucas Agostino really blitzed!

Academic Extension Science Project (Week 3 - Monday 3 August 2020)
Year 8 Academic Extension students were given the challenge of creating a 3-D model of a cell for their Science class. The cell could be prokaryotic, eukaryotic, plant, animal, general or specialised. The model had to be detailed, showing the organelles found within the cell. The result is a colourful collection of work now on display in our school Library. This opportunity allowed the students to use their creativity in a constructive process that taught them about the structure and function of this basic unit of life.
Well done to our new expert Biologists!

Landscape (Week 2 - Tuesday 28 July 2020)
Saturday workshops are an integral part of our Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program. This year, our Year 7 students are working in two groups that alternate between drawing and painting and clay sculpture. These landscapes were completed in Semester 1 with the direction of accomplished Western Australian painter and painting tutor, Torsten Knorr. Torsten taught our students about the fundamentals of drawing and painting, producing these large scale pieces which take reference from the local Shearwater Spoonbill Kingfisher Reserve. Nestled five minutes from the school, students were taken down to the Reserve to draw inspiration and create reference sketches from life to then use as guides for their final landscape painting.
Art Gallery of Western Australia Excursion (Week 2 - Monday 27 July 2020)
This week, the Years 10, 11 and 12 Gifted and Talented Visual Art students were taken on an excursion to the Art Gallery of Western Australia to soak up the Pulse Perspectives exhibition and Indigenous Art collection. It has been a delight to get back into our usual array of extra-curricular activities that are an integral part of the Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program here at Balcatta. The students were able to garner inspiration from last year’s top performing Year 12 graduates throughout the state as well as build on their understanding of indigenous art and culture.

Now experts in stoichiometry, our senior students can complete their last full term of school with confidence in their problem solving abilities.
