Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
At Balcatta Senior High School we recognise the importance of creating confident, flexible, self-directed, lifelong learners.
Our school has invested a significant amount of resources for additional bandwidth which will enable our sutdents to successfully study and research through their own devices.
BYOD has transformed the classroom by creating new opportunities for learning that ensure richer, more collaborative learning experiences. There is a wide body of research that supports the benefit for students of BYOD programs.
The school is well-equipped with a wireless network which is able to support laptops, tablets and iPads. All students are encouraged to bring their own device to school for classroom use only.
The most popular devices that have been selected are Windows laptops and Surface tablets. Apple laptops are also popular, as are iPads. Both operating systems work equally well on our system.
Balcatta Senior High School is working with JB Hi-Fi to set up a purchasing portal to offer discounted prices on a range of recommended devices. You must go through the JB Portal to access this pricing, as it is not available in the retail stores.
Various payment options are available, however, it is not compulsory to purchase your device from JB Hi-Fi.
When purchasing a new device, we recommended the following minimum specifications:
- Windows 10, or
- OSX 10.15, or
- 5” to 13” anti-glare screen
- 64GB hard drive
A small, lightweight device is preferable as larger laptops can be heavy and are more prone to damage. If students will be utilising a tablet/iPad it is recommended that a detachable keyboard is also purchased.
No matter which device is purchased, parents are reminded that an essential accessory is a solid protective case and/or bag to ensure the device is protected to withstand the school environment.
To access the JB Hi-Fi portal, please go to https://www.jbeducation.com.au/byod and type the code BalcattaSHS2020
A link is also available on our web page.
There is no need to purchase additional software. When your child brings the new device to school, Office 365 will be available to download, free of charge.
