Bring Your Own Device 2017
At Balcatta Senior High School we recognise the importance of creating confident, flexible, self- directed, lifelong learners. In 2015 to support this aim we introduced a “bring your own device” program (BYOD). Mobile technology devices, so prevalent in society, have increasingly become everyday teaching tools used by both teachers and students. BYOD has transformed the classroom by creating new opportunities for learning that ensures richer, more collaborative learning experiences. There is a wide body of research that supports the benefit for students of BYOD programs.
The school is well-equipped with its network, including wireless access to the internet. The network is able to support laptops, tablets and iPads. The BYOD program runs from Year 7 to Year 12. All students are expected to bring their own mobile device to school from the beginning of the year.
The most popular devices that have been selected are Windows laptops and Surface tablets. Apple laptops are also popular, as are iPads. Both operating systems work equally well on our system.
Devices can be purchased outright, leased or rented through various outlets. The school does not promote any one method or support any individual supplier.
When buying or leasing a device for your child please note the following recommended minimum specifications:
- Windows 8 or greater, or
- OSX 10.12 or greater, or
- iOS10 or greater
- Wireless G or N compatible
There are many models which are suitable. The minimum specifications required are a smaller rugged laptop with an 11” to 13" anti-glare screen and 120GB SSD.
Parents are advised that a small, lightweight device is preferable. Large laptops, as well as being heavy, are more prone to damage. If students will be utilising a tablet/iPad it is recommended that a detachable keyboard is also purchased.
No matter which device is purchased parents are reminded that an essential accessory is a solid protective case and/or bag to ensure the device is protected to withstand the school environment.
In the current environment the majority of applications and software tools are internet based and devices now come equipped with the bulk of required software. There is no real need to purchase an Office Suite or similar product. Office 365 is available for download, free of charge, and students will be able to purchase the Adobe suite from the school for $25.00 when it becomes available.
If an Office Suite is purchased, we recommend MS Office or iWork.
