Farewell to Year 12 students – 21 September 2022

23 September 2022

On Wednesday 21 September, the school community acknowledged the Year 12 Class of 2022 at their final assembly.  It was great to see so many family and friends attend.  The students were told at the start of the year, how quickly the year would go.  Again, we had the impact of COVID-19 which affected a number of students and staff.  As a school community, we have ensured the students are well-positioned when they leave Balcatta SHS and commence the next part of their learning journey.

At the assembly, I shared some of the unique opportunities and events this group of students has been part of, such as:

  • 50th Anniversary celebrations of Balcatta SHS
  • 40th Anniversary of Gifted and Talented Visual Art Program
  • 40th Anniversary of Specialist Dance Program
  • Years 7-8 Science Fair
  • Music Program – inaugural Year 8 group
  • STEAM Train transition program
  • Extra-curricular events such as debating, electronics and coding, robotics, soccer, basketball and volleyball
  • Inaugural House leaders and Captains.

A large number of Year 12 students has successfully undertaken Vocational Education and Training at TAFE one day a week or have attended a work placement, which has allowed students to gain valuable skills and experience.  It will be interesting to hear which pathways our students will take in the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally acknowledge the commitment from teaching and support staff who have contributed to the development of the Year 12 Class of 2022.  Special thanks to Mr David Curtis, Year 11/12 Coordinator and Ms Tessa Curtis, Associate Principal.  They have had a significant role in guiding and supporting this group of students.  The Year 12 leaders, Adzi Zein and Saadah Mahmoud gave their address at the assembly and have represented the school by always demonstrating the school values of Respect-Unite-Excel.

We wish the Year 12 ATAR students the best for their upcoming mock exams next week.

On Friday 23 September, the students were able to participate in novelty events such as:

  • tug-of-war
  • sack races
  • three-legged races
