Academic Extension

ACADEMIC EXTENSION PROGRAM

Balcatta Senior High School is committed to providing opportunities for academic extension and enrichment for high achieving students.

The program brings together like-minded, high achieving students to accelerate their learning across all learning areas. Students are exposed to problem-based and co-operative learning strategies that provide stimulation and challenge to each learning experience.

Aims

The Academic Extension Program offers:

  • Acceleration of students through the standard Western Australian Curriculum
  • Possible extension of students into content from further year levels
  • Opportunities for students to explore the curriculum in more depth
  • Development of students’ study and organisation skills
  • Provided opportunities to excursions, incursions and competitions to develop leadership, self-confidence and problem-solving skills.

Selection into the Program

To apply for the Academic Extension Program, parents must supply the following information:

  • Most recent school reports
  • Year 5 NAPLAN results
  • Primary teacher’s recommendation form

Students are then invited to a selection day during which they sit an aptitude test and participate in problem-solving and creativity activities.

Students’ selection into the program is based on all aspects of their application, including their performance on the selection day.

Round 2 – Friday 9 August 2024

An enrolment package including AEP Application Form will be sent to you in due course.

Structure of the program

Students in Years 7 and 8 AEP program are placed in the same Mathematics, English, Science and HASS classes. Students in 9 and 10 AEP classes will be streamed by subject, rather than being in one class for all MESH subjects (Mathematics, English, Science and HASS). The highest achieving students for each subject will be placed in the academic extension class for that subject. This will be determined by the Head of Learning Area for each MESH subject. As a result, students may be placed in a minimum of one and a maximum of four academic classes, depending on their academic performance in that subject.

Evaluation

To maintain placement in the program, students must uphold a high standard of academic achievement and behaviour. Students’ performance will be evaluated at the end of each semester.
